In the Goodwood Cup (3.10) at Goodwood on Thursday, Big Orange returned to something approaching his very best when making all and staying on strongly to beat The Grey Gatsby by 2½ lengths in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes, over 1 mile 4 furlongs, on the July Course at Newmarket earlier this month and can repeat his win in this race last year. Michael Bell’s 5-year-old is 2lb worse off for a neck with Quest For More this time, but is following a similar path to last year and, with conditions in his favour, there appears no reason why he shouldn’t make another bold bid. The Duke Of Marmalade gelding, whom his trainer says is ‘physically stronger’ this year, was originally intended to run in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, but the decision to follow a less arduous route can pay dividends.
