Why Going to the Pub is the New Going to the Races I don’t know about you, but in these days of the cost of living crisis I’m looking to save the pennies and as they say: ‘The pounds will look after themselves.’

That’s what my old gran used to say.

However, the problem with saving the pennies is that it might lessen the chance of going out for a day at the races. True, it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to get into many race courses but it can be expensive. For example, I frequently go to Great Yarmouth racecourse which costs at least £18 (to £32) entry and £7 a pint, and all this extra 50p for the use of a plastic pint container which really is scandalous.

It all adds up to an expensive day.

You may be saying: ‘Well, how do you enjoy a horse racing experience and possibly a free pint (or two) for nothing.

‘Sounds cheap.’

This is where going to the pub can be a real blessing. However, you need to find the right pub and hope they have the racing on the TV and a ‘killer’ promotion.

Now, I don’t know every pub in the UK (although I have drunk a few pints in many) but I know of one pub in Great Yarmouth called The Feathers located at Market Gates which really is a gem. If you want a free drink, a lively atmosphere and watch a good day’s racing then you will be in very good company.

The Feathers Public house has a free promotion which coincides with a Great Yarmouth horse racing fixtures. I’m not sure who promotes the day but they have a great competition, which is free to join as long as you can get a seat, where you pick a horse in each of the races on the card and if your horse wins you get a free pint of beer or the tipple of your choice. It’s quite remarkable what you can get for free if you know where to go.

It’s quite an atmosphere in The Feathers and the landlord has a microphone and speaker system and I almost jumped out of my skin when at he shouted ‘They’re off!’ at 100 decibels. And when an outsider hosed up and not one regular won a free pint he shouts ‘Losers!!!!’ He doesn’t foot the bill for the promotion so I honestly don’t think he’d care if the favourite cruised home and the crowd cheered in triumph winning 50 pints.

It really is a great venue and it’s a pleasure to feel part of the community even if you’re an outsider who turns up for the day.

The great thing about The Feathers is that even if you don’t win a free pint it costs less than £3.

When you consider going to the races and having one pint will cost you £25 (on a good day) there is an alternative to making a cheap day out an option.

Thanks for many a great day at The Feathers.
